When using an atmosphere based pump aeration system an inline sanitary air filter (shown in picture) should be used. These filter down to 0.023 microns, which will take care of most microbiological agents that could potentially contaminate beer. Sanitary air filters should be kept dry and while they are not directional, they should always be used in the same direction once installed with the 'in' side always being in and the 'out' side always being out. 

A filter is not required if oxygenating with pure oxygen from a tank.
