An auto-ranging multimeter is preferred as there's no fear of frying it if you don't set the range correctly. While any sub $20 multimeter will do for our purposes, if you're looking for a good meter to use in other projects and keep for life (and aren't embarrassed to show your electrician), we recommend the easy to use & rugged Fluke series of multimeters. The Fluke 115 Compact True-RMS Digital Multimeter (shown in picture) or Fluke 101 Basic Digital Multimeter are reasonably priced choices that won't break the first time you drop them (it will happen).
