A foam stopper keeps bugs and other contaminants out of your flask while making a yeast starter. Unlike an airlock which only lets CO2 out, a foam stopper also allows air to flow freely into your flask for continuous aeration. Useful if you have fruit fly issues, otherwise aluminum foil works fine.
