A hydrometer test jar or graduated cylinder (shown in picture) is needed in order to float the hydrometer in the liquid sample we are measuring. Make sure it is tall enough for the hydrometer. A 12" length is usually adequate.
A hydrometer test jar made out of borosilicate glass is ideal as it will never go cloudy as plastic can over time. Glass is however more fragile so care is required. Many come with a polyethylene bumper guard ring that reduces the chance of it breaking if knocked over. We keep our hydrometer and test jar up high and out of the way to ensure they never get bumped or knocked over accidentally. They only come down when a measurement is required. We've had (knock on wood) the same hydrometer and test jar since the 1980s.
