Stick-on liquid crystal strip thermometers are a surprisingly accurate method for measuring the wort temperature as long as the liquid is in motion (when used on a yeast starter flask give it a swirl for a few seconds for an accurate reading). Roughly 60-90F range is handy, though most starters are made in the mid 70F range (slightly above room temperature). 

Not recommended for measuring fermentation temperature in glass carboys as the thicker wall is actually a fairly good insulator.
